Coming off the pill...

... after 11 years!

There has been lots of talk about this subject in magazines, blogs and all over social media recently and I've been thinking about coming off for a while now but it wasn't until my Dr's surgery was literally too full up to fit me in (no joke) that I decided to actually do it.

For me this is a bit of a personal experiment, to see what my body is like without the pill because I honestly cannot remember. I know for some people it affects their mood/mental health or their weight and for others it helps to mask symptoms like acne or painful heavy periods as well as conditions like polycystic ovaries. However, for me, I'm not sure?

The thing that I am most concerned about is my skin, when I was about 23 I had a terrible breakout, I had never experienced anything like it and I was so mortified I wouldn't go anywhere (not even the gym) without wearing a full face of makeup and I wouldn't let anyone see me without it. Back then the only thing that helped was changing my pill and nowadays I get the odd monthly breakout but nothing horrendous and it has been in check ever since, I'd like to keep it that way (fingers crossed).

It's only been 3 weeks and so far so good, apart from a few headaches, however I am going to be keeping a close eye on my body (and mind) and reporting back for anyone that is interested. I've spoken to a few friends recently and there definitely seems to be a trend for trying more natural, less hormonal contraceptives (like Natural Cycles). It has taken me ages to actually take the plunge and go cold turkey so if you have been thinking about it but, like me, have been too scared of the effects (cue heavy periods, bad skin and not knowing the exact date you will come on) then I will be your guinea pig. I have heard some really positive things from those that have already ditched the pill...

P.s In a bid to keep my skin in check I have just done a bit of a skincare haul so here is me with my new Body Shop face mask on, I will also be posting about this soon:

EDIT: Ok, so I have been about 6 weeks pill free and have started to notice some changes that I thought I would share...

Headaches: For the first few weeks I kept getting minor headaches that would last a few days at a time. I didn't even know this was a symptom of coming off the pill and it wasn't until my friend asked if I'd had any that I even realised it was connected but the timeline matches up!

Boobs: My boobs have definitely got a bit smaller, but I'm ok with that. It makes exercise easier anyway...

Skin: This is the biggest change I noticed. I mentioned my skin in the above post and how I was worried that my spots would come back but this hasn't been the case. Instead, my skin type seems to have changed completely. I used to have normal/dry skin and in the last few weeks I've developed very oily skin, but only on my face. I'm not sure what's better or worse but it does mean I've had to change my skincare products to suit it better. Apparently oily skin means less wrinkles too!

Bloating: I used to suffer with bloating, there was no particular pattern to it but since being free this has pretty much gone and I'm so happy, which brings me on to my last point...

Happy: I feel so much happier! I don't know if this is a combination of things or just down to coming off the pill but I feel so much calmer and generally just a happier person and this is the best bit about all of it!

I'm sure there will be more, but so far so good :)
